Job Shadow

At the beginning of the day, I woke up and met my person, Li Xingchu, who works as a meat scientist and innovator of new recipes and ways to use chemicals, at around 8:00. He is a home worker, so there was no tour of a "building" and such.

During the first few hours until around 8:00-11:00 he took care of some business while I read a large book containing the basics of the chemical properties of meat and how to operate the different machines needed to work with meat. There was interesting stuff, such as how pH affects water binding and cooking, and that meat can only be processed after a "rigor mortis" period has taken place after an animal is killed.

At around 11:20 or so, he went to Food Lion and came back with some raw pork shoulder. He showed me how to properly cut the meat, by placing the knife over the top fully and pulling it back instead of pushing down for clean cutting. I cut half of it into little strips and we put it into a grinder, and he showed me how to assemble, operate, and clean a grinder. After that, he showed me how to package the meat and freeze it. We used the other half, which contained a bone, to make a meal. We cut the bone out, and tossed it into a pot with sauerkraut and cooked it. It was pretty good.

That is pretty much all I did, not going to lie. All his coworkers work at home as well, so he only can talk over phone or by email, and he travels a lot when he goes to work on large projects. (It's a Chinese company.)

Lesson 8 Making Presentations

Lesson 8 Making Presentations

There are three main purposes for making a presentation.
  • Inform
  • Educate
  • Entertain
Audiences learn by :
  • Seeing
  • Hearing
  • Doing
Main parts of a presentation include :
  • Text
  • Charts and Graphs
  • Images
  • Audio/Video
A Few Rules :
  • Keep Slides Easy to Read
  • State Purpose
  • Add Good Images
  • Use Friendly Speaking Style
  • Don't Simply Read Slides
Colors and font size are important.
Never use black back with red text.
Use light background with dark text preferably, as it feels better with paper being white.
Always remember that you must scale text size with size of presentation room.

Organize Slides Effectively :

  • State Purpose
  • Present Info in Multiple Ways
  • End w/ Summary
Add Supporting Images :

  • Keep People Interested
  • Reinforce Key Messages
  • Help Visual Learners
  • Avoid Clutter
  • Don't Use Too Many Colors
  • Never Mix Clip Art and Real Images
Relax and be Friendly
  • Never Read Word for Word from Slide
  • Don't Talk too Fast
  • Add Own Info and Examples
  • Allow Note Taking Time
  • Answer Audience Questions
  • Practice Presenting

POIT Lesson 6 Peripherals

Notes for School

Peripherals are devices used for computer input and output and can include -

  • Mouse (input) - send signals that send cursor in directions
  • Keyboard (input) - input device that send a signal of keys and key combinations for actions
  • Monitor (output) - displays images and pixels to represent what is happening
  • Printer (output) - puts images and words onto paper and brings it into real world
  • USB/Flashdrive (input) - evolved from floppy disk to CD to USB to SSD Drives
Scanners - reads a document and image and sends it to computer

What is your impression of the first 9-weeks of high school?  What has been difficult about the transition from middle school?  What has been easy about the transition?  What have you learned about yourself?

In the first nine weeks of school I haven't done too well. I've missed a lot of days of school for being sick and not done a lot of work. The hardest part of the transition from middle school to high school has definitely been my sleep schedule. I went from waking up at close to 7:20 to waking up at 5:25, almost a full two hours ahead. It causes me to feel more tired each day, and if I spend too long doing homework in the night, I will end up getting minimal amounts of sleep each night. If there is any easy part, it's that nothing. Nothing has been easy. I share classes with none of my friends, my sleep is messed up, the work is harder, in general it's been an adjustment that I'm not quite into yet, even after nine weeks. As for what I've learned about myself, I.... really don't know....

Trends and Factors

POIT Questions

What 3 trends do you see in computer evolution? AND Why?
Computers have been developing to become more and more graphically pleasant, with the main cores of the computer staying relatively stable, as GPU quality has been growing at an unheard of rate, with the other parts becoming advanced only to handle the capacity of these parts.

You can also see the changing UI of windows to evolve to become more pleasant.

Also, the ability to spread the internet farther and faster could help PCs evolve in many ways, possibly in the future desktops a with wifi connection can be standard with high internet speeds.

Name 3 factors that drive technological innovation?
In terms of a PC, gaming has driven it quite far. At least in terms of what's inside of a PC. With millions of people willing to spend top dollar on the best graphics, you better believe companies will be building better things.

Other things that spur it are simply to keep it up to standards.

Also building supercomputers that can handle tons and tons of information and store unheard of amounts for businesses could be a major project.

All computer systems are basically alike on the inside.
-STRONGLY Disagree

Peer to Peer networks are a great way to share all kinds of files.

Open Source Software is the wave of the future. Soon it won't matter what kind of machine a person has, because everything will be open source and easily translatable from one operating system to another,
-Disagree

Although computer programmers should focus on learning the very latest programming languages, older programs written in languages like C, are still important to learn.
-Disagree

Unrestricted access to technology is a fundamental human right.
